Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, is a stunning backdrop for any photoshoot. With its blend of modern marvels, natural beaches, and vast deserts, it offers a diverse range of locations that can enhance the mood and style of your photos. As a photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring many of these spots and can’t wait to share my top recommendations for capturing your best moments in this vibrant city.
1. The desert
When you think Abu Dhabi, what picture comes to your mind? My mind immediately goes to the desert.
By far my most popular location choice is undoubtedly the desert, and for a good reason, there are no restrictions there, it's private, the children enjoy playing on the giant sand slides, it's pet friendly, there is always a the chance that you will see a camel, and it's absolutely gorgeous!
Best For: Casual, lifestyle, couples, maternity and family photoshoots.
Downside: You will find sand in the most unexpected places for weeks after your session, ha ha.. Not the best for children under 2. Limited to the winter season and the drive there can be quite long.
2. Wahat Al Karama and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an architectural masterpiece and one of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic landmarks. Its pristine white marble and grand domes create a breathtaking backdrop that adds an element of elegance to your photos.
Early morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid crowds and capture the soft, diffused light that enhances the mosque’s beauty.
Wahat Al Karama is opposite the mosque and offers the best view to the Grand Mosque.
Best For: Portraits with a touch of sophistication, family and couples.
Downside: Dress code inside the mosque is abaya and head scarf, covering all your hair. The angles and poses in which we can take photos inside the mosque are very limited. Only shoulders and knees must be covered at Wahat Al Karama.
3. Beaches
The picturesque waterfront with its clear blue waters, white sandy beaches make for a fantastic setting. Children love playing in the sand and splash water, get ready to get wet and sandy during these sessions, but it's all worth it when you see the final result.
Best For: Casual, lifestyle, family, couples, maternity and stylish fashion shoots.
Downside: Most Abu Dhabi beaches don't allow for professional photography, some beaches ask for a photoshoot permit fee on top of the entrance fee and most beaches are not pet friendly.
4. Souq Al Mina
For a vibrant and character-filled setting, Souq Al Mina in Abu Dhabi offers a truly distinctive backdrop. The repeating arches that line the walkways create beautiful rhythm and depth, framing moments in a way that feels both architectural and timeless. Soft light filters through the curves and shadows, adding warmth and dimension to every image. Combined with the waterfront atmosphere and textured surroundings, the arches make Souq Al Mina an ideal location for natural yet visually striking photography, perfect for those looking for something a little different.
Best For: Casual, lifestyle, maternity, family, and stylish fashion shoots.
Downside: Depending on the time of day, it can get busy, requires some editing to remove the signs and people in the background.
6. Umm Al Emarat Park
In the heart of the city, Umm Al Emarat Park is one of Abu Dhabi's greenest spaces, offering a refreshing contrast to the city's urban landscape. The park's lush lawns, botanical gardens, and picturesque water areas provide a peaceful and vibrant setting for photoshoots. It’s a great location for family sessions with young children thanks to its diverse landscapes and fun area the children will surely love. My personal favorite is the wadi area where families can get in the water and splash about a little.
Best For: Casual, lifestyle, couples, maternity and family photoshoots.
Downside: It's busy on weekends, no privacy and not a pet friendly location.
7. The Flower Farm Abu Dhabi
For a burst of color and nature, The Flower Farm offers a delightful and vibrant setting. Rows upon rows of colorful flowers in full bloom provide a picturesque backdrop that is perfect for romantic couple shoots, family portraits, or a mummy and me photoshoot. The farm’s natural beauty, paired with the bright and lively atmosphere, makes it an ideal location for those looking for a refreshing and cheerful photoshoot. And the best part is, you can pick your own bouquet of flowers.
Best For: Mothers day photoshoots, lifestyle, couples, maternity and family photoshoots.
Downside: The farm is only open for a few months in the winter, the opening of the farm is unknown until after the hot season, it's can get busy on weekends and not a pet friendly location. There is now a 100 AED photography permit fee at this location.
