A lot of families can't imagine a family portrait without their fur babies and I always encourage including your dogs in photoshoots, whenever it's possible as it can be a lot of fun and add personality to your pictures, making them even more special.
But preparing for a photoshoot with your dog requires some extra steps, here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure you and your pup are camera-ready.
Select the Perfect Location
The location of your photoshoot can greatly impact the comfort and behavior of your dog.
Outdoor Settings: Beaches or the desert provide plenty of space for your dog to feel at ease, wherever we choose to have the photoshoot we need to make sure that it's pet friendly and that professional photography is allowed as this can be challenging in the UAE.
Indoor Settings: Your home offers a safe and controlled environment, which can be beneficial for dogs that are easily distracted or anxious outside.
Prepare Your Dog
A well-prepared dog is more likely to behave well during the photoshoot.
Exercise: If you have a high-energy dog, make sure they gets plenty of exercise before the shoot to help them burn off excess energy. We don't want to force your dog to sit still if they are full of energy and all they want to do is run.
Grooming: Give your dog a bath, brush their coat, and trim their nails. A clean and well-groomed dog looks better in photos.
Training: Brush up on basic commands like sit, stay, and come. Practice having your dog sit or lie down near you for extended periods.
Plan Coordinating Outfits
Your outfits should complement each other and your dog’s accessories.
Comfort and Style: Choose comfortable clothing that you feel good in. Solid colors and simple patterns work best.
Dog Accessories: A stylish collar, bandana, or bowtie that matches or complements your outfit can add a coordinated touch. I understand that not all dogs can go off lead, and that is absolutely fine. You can opt for a leather or black lead and collar set.
What to bring with you to the shoot
Having the right supplies on hand can make a big difference.
Treats and Toys: Bring plenty of treats and a favorite toy to keep your dog’s attention and reward good behavior.
Water and Bowl: Keep your dog hydrated, especially if you’re shooting outdoors.
Set your dog's boundaries with the photographer
I absolutely love dogs and I know that every dog is different, they all have their unique personalities and quirks, you can let me know what your dog likes and dislikes, how they like to be approached or what makes them scared.
You can hand me some of their treats or their toy and I will use them to help us get the shots we want.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable with me petting or calling your dogs please feel free to let me know, and whenever you feel like your dog isn't happy, we will immediately end the session, you have total control and we'll only do the things you are comfortable with.
