Even though the weather is getting hotter in Abu Dhabi and summer is just around the corner, you don’t have to give up on having a photoshoot.
At-home sessions are beautifully personal. Whether we're capturing your family’s everyday moments, a cozy newborn session, or a relaxed lifestyle shoot, being in your own space brings a special kind of magic to your photos.
But I know inviting a photographer into your home can feel a little daunting—so I’ve put together my top tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your shoot.
1. Don’t Stress About Having a ‘Perfect’ Home
First things first—your home doesn’t need to look like a Pinterest board. I’m not coming to photograph your furniture; I’m coming to capture your story. Focus on tidying the areas we’ll be shooting in (I’ll help guide you when I arrive), and don’t worry about every corner being spotless.
Quick tips:
* Clear away clutter from bedside tables, kitchen counters, and coffee tables.
* Hide anything you don’t want in photos (chargers, laundry baskets, bright toys).
* Lightly stage with simple props like blankets, fresh flowers, or books if you’d like—but keep it real to you.
2. Let the Light In
Natural light is a huge part of what makes at-home photos feel so soft and inviting. In the days leading up to your session, pay attention to which rooms get the best light and at what times. We’ll aim to shoot in those spaces.
Before I arrive:
* Open all your blinds and curtains.
* Turn off overhead lights and lamps so we don’t mix warm and cool tones.
3. What Time should you Book your Shoot?
Natural light makes all the difference in creating warm, glowing photos—and every home is different. In the days leading up to your session, I’d love for you to keep an eye on which rooms get the best light and when. Notice when your living room or bedroom feels the brightest and coziest—that's likely our sweet spot!
Once you have a general idea, we’ll choose a time that works both for your home’s lighting and for your family’s rhythm. Ideally, we’ll aim for after the children have had a nap and something to eat so they’re rested, full, and happy.
A well-lit space plus happy kiddos? That’s the magic combo.
Don’t worry if you’re unsure—just keep me posted on what you notice, and we’ll figure it out together.
4. What to Wear: Keep It Comfortable and Coordinated
Your wardrobe should reflect your style and feel good to wear. For at-home shoots, I recommend cozy, neutral, or earthy tones. Soft textures like linen, knitwear, and cotton photograph beautifully.
A few ideas:
* Avoid bold logos, neon colors, or busy patterns that can distract from your faces.
* Choose outfits that complement each other without being too matchy.
* Bare feet are absolutely welcome!
* Lay out a few options and we can decide together what works best in your space.
5. Think About the Story You Want to Tell
At-home sessions are about capturing your life, your love, your rhythm. Do you want to bake cookies with your kids? Snuggle in bed with your newborn? Sip coffee on the balcony? Let me know the little moments that matter most to you—we can plan around them.
Having a few loose ideas (or a Pinterest mood board!) can help guide the shoot, but don’t worry—there’s always room for spontaneous magic.
6. Prepare the People (and Pets) in Your Home
Let your partner and little ones know this isn’t a stiff, formal shoot—it’s more like a relaxed hangout with a camera involved.
* For kids: Tell them I'm coming, explain to them what I do and get them excited, have a favorite toy or snack nearby, make sure they are well rested and don’t stress if they’re full of energy—that’s part of the story.
* For babies: Feed and change them right before we start so they’re comfy and calm.
* For partners: Remind them this is quick, relaxed, and pain-free. Promise!
And if you have pets? I’m always happy to include them (unless your pets are reptiles, keep those far away from me, ha ha).
7. Want to Step Outside? Let’s Do It!
If time (and weather!) allow, we can absolutely step outside for a few photos. Whether it’s your garden, by the pool, on the balcony, or even just around your building, these little outdoor pockets often make for beautiful, natural backdrops—and add lovely variety to your gallery.
Let me know ahead of time if you have an outdoor space you love, and we’ll work it into the flow of the session. Sometimes the most unexpected corners—like a sunlit stairwell or a wall with great texture—end up being favourites!
8. Relax—You’re in Good Hands
I know being in front of the camera can feel vulnerable, especially in your own space. But I promise, my job is to make you feel comfortable and seen. I’ll guide you every step of the way with gentle prompts and direction, but I’ll also leave space for genuine moments to unfold.
You don’t need to “perform” or fake smiles. Just be yourselves—that’s always more than enough.
In Summary:
At-home sessions are about connection, not perfection. With a little light, a little tidying, and an open heart, your home becomes the perfect setting for photos you’ll treasure for years.
If you ever feel unsure or have questions before the shoot—ask away! I’m here to help make the experience fun, easy, and authentically you.
